The Fujian Tulou are fortified buildings of significant architectural interest spread throughout the Fujian region in China.
After being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, the Tulou have become increasingly well-known worldwide and a destination for growing tourism.
In the effort to enhance this incredible heritage, we were selected and invited by the architect Xu Tiantian, winner of the prestigious Swiss Architectural Award in 2022 and coordinator of an extensive restoration program, to develop the recovery and reuse project for Lingyun Tulou: a building dating back to the late Ming dynasty in the village of Tingan, Fujian, China.
The project, which involves the requalification of an extensive portion of the surrounding marvelous landscape, is grounded in the need to preserve the integrity of the surviving earthen walls through careful roof design. Construction techniques draw inspiration from tradition, utilizing low-tech solutions that can be implemented by local farmers. Currently in the bidding phase, the project is set to be completed in the spring of 2025.
