The project site is located on the immediate outskirts of Milan, in a residential context from the 1970s. At its center lies an amphitheater, a structure dating back to the area's initial urbanization phase. Among the numerous amphitheaters, recurring elements in Italian urban design during the 1970s and 1980s, conceived as centers for social activities and neighborhood events, very few have achieved their intended purpose. Most have ended up in a state of semi-neglect and decay.  The specific case is no exception: like a ruin passed down from antiquity, its strong typological and symbolic connotations paradoxically render it akin to an architectural presence now devoid of function, belonging to a historical, social, and cultural context vastly different from what has evolved around it over time. Building upon these premises, the idea of requalifying the amphitheater, essentially an infrastructural system designed to retain, slow down, and gradually infiltrate rainwater into the ground, has taken the form of a sort of metaphysical ruin from an indeterminate era. Echoing recurring elements in ancient ruins, concrete block foundations have been introduced within, transforming this space into a mysterious architectural relic and a potential subject for exploration, intended to be periodically and temporarily flooded. This latter circumstance occurs for limited periods and only during meteorological events of particular intensity. The amphitheater, once a current, degraded, and underutilized structure, is thus metamorphosed into an authentically resilient architectural presence, capable of absorbing and enhancing the effects of time, weathering, inadequate maintenance, mistreatment, while simultaneously offering nearly infinite possibilities for use.
