A
few sites of the Yilong region preserve almost intact the original, virtually
“eternal”, structure of the landscape. These are the mountainous portions of
land, where development is inhibited by their rugged topography. The design
identifies and enhances the project site as a piece of land that, although
located in the flatland, belongs to the same landscape order and origin of its
millennial surroundings. The site therefore is understood as a Big Garden
surrounded by a system of compact Towns, emerging as visible landmarks. Together
they preserve the identity of the place. The Garden is both a magnet and a
lung. It is an equalizer bringing balance and beauty, consciousness and a sense
of belonging: the connection with the “Deep Matter” of the place that stretches
far beyond the specific location and the specific time. Surrounded by main
traffic arteries the circular perimeter becomes both an enclosure and an
“orbital” system, selectively connecting with roads. Its shape, establishes a
relationship with the broader landscape.
